The more I think about it, the more I like this blog title. The Unvanishing Man.
It seems to fit what I’m trying to accomplish, which is to become more solid, more substantive, more weighty.
I love how, in the Bible, the word “glory” has meanings of weightiness and gravity. (As opposed to things that are light and frivolous and vain and gone tomorrow.) So I guess you might say, I’m going for glory here!
A few thoughts on this…
(1) It fits in well with the goal of slowing down, and living patiently. Think about it: heavy things tend to be slower things. To the degree that we lack substance and solidity, we’re more likely to scurry and be scurried by strong winds.
(2) It also fits well with the goal of seeing tech as tools, and resisting their draw to become my masters. Think about it: heavy things tend to be less easily drawn by outside pulls. (Come to think of it, maybe there’s some cultural analysis in there: could it be that, as a society, we’re too easily drawn into our devices because we lack substance? We’re light and frivolous people…and it shows.)
(3) It also fits well with the goal (which I’ve feared is hopeless) of becoming—gasp!—an adult. Think about it: growing up means, among other things, adding the solidity and weight of experience and wisdom. Could it be…that it’s actually happening? Even just a little? Still hard to imagine, but maybe.
(4) One more. It also fits well with the idea of improving my posture, and walking better. Walking like somebody who’s there, and not just a hologram. Walking like somebody who’s earned the right to stand up straight and take my time.
I remember pausing and wondering, back when I was trying to settle on this blog title. Looking back, I’m glad I landed where I did.
